DIY RV Slide Out Trim

Manufacturers may be improving the look of RV's, slowly, but man do they still have a long ways to go. For those looking for a simple and affordable renovation option, this DIY slide out trim is the perfect weekend project. Replacing the trim around our slide out added so much warmth and texture to our space. 

Materials

- 120 grit sand paper 

- wood stain of your choice

- staining brush

- 1"x 6"x 14' furring strip boards from Home Depot

- wood putty

- 1.5" finishing nails

Process

1. Start by removing the old slide out trim

2. Make your measurements and cut your wooden boards to size. If you don't have a table saw you can always ask Home Depot to make the cuts for you at time of purchase.

3. Sand the boards with 120 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain.

4. Wipe the boards down with a rag and warm water in order to remove any dust. Allow boards to dry fully before moving to the next step.

5. Apply your first coat of stain making sure to spread the stain in the direction of the grain and removing any excess as you go with a rag. Allow the stain to soak in for 10-15 minutes before wiping down the board, again, for any additional excess stain. 

6. If you plan to apply a second coat be sure to do so within the time frame listed on the manufacturers label. 

7. Allow the stain to fully dry before sealing. We used one coat of polyurethane in "matte." 

8. Mount the vertical boards first using 1.5"-2" finishing nails. 

9. Mount the horizontal board using a screw at both ends and one in the center of the board to properly secure. Sink the head of the screw into the wood and cover with wood putty. For extra security use a handful of finishing nails.

10. With a paper towel apply a very small amount of stain to the wood putty and blend.
