One Room Challenge | DIY Leather Strap Shelf

Welcome to week 6 of the One Room Challenge! This may be my quickest and simplest DIY to date! I found an old outdated shelf and was able to transform it into a modern floating shelf using $5 leather strips from Michaels. This project took me approximately 15 minutes! After painting, I knew the area above the toilet needed something but I didn't want to go out and buy something just for the sake of filling space. That's where the shelf idea came into play. Here is some of my inspiration I found when exploring some cheap and easy DIY shelving options. As much as I adore the macrame shelves, the leather ultimately stole my heart.

Hammer
Nails
Shelf or wood plank - sanded and stained
Leather strips

If you don't have an old shelf lying around that you can repurpose you can easily make your own for less than $10! Grab a plank of unfinished wood from Home Depot or Lowe's, sand and stain your preferred color and voila!

Now cut your leather strips to the desired length. Make sure that your pieces are equal in length, any small discrepancy could cause your shelf to hang lopsided. Take your newly cut strip and fold it in half. Place the folded leather on a scrap piece of wood and gently tap your nail through the leather strip. This will make the hanging process much easier. Once you've made your hole in the leather, remove the nail from the scrap wood. Line it up where you want it and nail the leather strap to the wall. Now slide your shelf through the leather loops and position it how you'd like. That's it!

I love that this was so quick, simple and easy but filled the necessary void in this space. I was able to style the shelf with an old painting I had lying around and a dollar tree vase and faux greenery. You can use bathroom essentials, towel, washcloths, photos, paintings and or greenery to style your space. The possibilities are endless so have fun with it!
