One Room Challenge | Natural Dye Hand Towel
I think it's safe to say I've become addicted to natural dye. After dyeing my duvet cover using avocado pits and onion skins, I was totally hooked and decided this time around to take on a more simple project. I was inspired by the large painting we hung in our bathroom to pull some marigold / soft yellow into this space. What better way to do so than with a hand towel? I love being able to swap hand towels to match the season and this is exactly what I needed to finish up this space. If you're nervous or hesitant about natural dyeing this is probably one of the easiest dyes to make and a perfect place to start. All you will need is some fabric, a stock pot, turmeric and white vinegar. As with any natural dye project your results may vary greatly depending on the type of water you use, amount of vinegar, amount of turmeric and type of fabric.
I filled my stock pot with 16 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of turmeric and 1/2 cup of vinegar. The vinegar helps the turmeric bond to the fabric, this is essential to a successful dye. You can easily vary the amount of any of the above ingredients to either increase or decrease the intensity of the color. Once you have filled the stock pot, bring the mixture to a boil and quickly reduce the heat to a simmer. As you are doing so wet your fabric with warm water. Add your fabric and remove the mixture from heat. Allow the fabric to remain in the dye until you achieve your desired shade!
Once you've reached your desired shade, remove the fabric and rinse with cold water. This process is rather tedious due to the turmeric, continue rinsing until the water runs clear. Be very cautious to rinse all the dye solution down the drain immediately as it will stain your countertops and sinks if left to sit!
